Changes to how we send you news

We are now sending out the HHS Connect Newsletter by email, as well as sending it by SMS. This is another way we want to connect and stay in contact with you. It is the same newsletter sent by email and SMS.

We made this change as we heard not everyone likes to read information on their phone. We no longer send the newsletter by print, as we are reducing our environmental impacts.

If you do not want to get our Connect newsletter notifications, please follow these steps: • to stop getting the newsletter by email click ‘unsubscribe’ at the bottom of the email • to stop getting the newsletter by email – reply STOP to the SMS message

We encourage you to stay subscribed because in Connect News we share: • what is happening at Haven Home Safe • good news stories • changes to our policies or services • competitions and opportunities • our contact details

Message from the CEO
This year Haven Home Safe is busy improving how we service our most important people – our clients. We’re looking at ways we can make sure our services are consistent and provide the best possible experience for everyone we work with.

With both a Federal and State election taking place this year, there’s lots of opportunities to improve how the nation and Victoria deals with a lack of affordable and social housing for people. We’re continuing to advocate for more to be done to increase the supply of social and affordable housing, as well as applying for the Victorian Government’s funding rounds as part of the Big Housing Build. In total we’ve bid for 18 new projects that would deliver 199 properties across Bendigo, Ballarat, Mildura, Swan Hill, Robinvale, Ararat, Creswick and Warracknabeal.

This month work has started on 14 new affordable homes in Ballarat and another 25 new affordable homes in Horsham, all funded through Homes Victoria’s Big Housing Build. We are also working on two projects in Tarneit and two properties in Carrum Downs.

We’ve also announced new partnerships with the Mallee District Aboriginal Services (MDAS) and Wimmera Development Association (WDA). We’ll be working with MDAS to provide tenancy and property management across the Mallee region and jointly tender to increase the availability of housing for the MDAS community via the Victorian Government’s Big Housing Build, Homes for Aboriginal Victorians funding round. The WDA are strongly focused on housing solutions to meet the many challenges faced in that area of the state. We’re partnering with them to identify new social and affordable housing opportunities and help people in the community with the application process for social and affordable housing.

Until next time, take care.
Andrew Cairns CEO
Regular inspections are back!
We are returning to run regular property inspections. Inspections are an important part of our role and responsibility as a landlord.

We have new Covid inspection protocols and precautions to keep you and our staff safe. We now limit the amount of time we spend in each property, and we wear masks while we’re in people’s homes.

If you contact us in advance to let us know you are unwell, we’ll accommodate that and reschedule it. Our staff can also share information about who your local community health service is.

If you have questions or concerns about your routine inspections, please contact your Tenancy and Property Manager.

If you are unsure who your Manager is, see our Contact Us details at the end of this news.
Reminder: Please report your maintenance before your routine inspections
You don’t need to wait for an inspection to report your maintenance. Please report maintenance issues as soon as they occur.

AHA and Active SDA tenants can make maintenance requests by calling: 1300 100 242 or emailing maintenance@hhs.org.au.

Urgent Repairs
Burst water pipe, broken toilet, serious roof leak, broken hot water system and unsafe electrical fittings are all examples of urgent repairs. Please make urgent requests asap. Requests are confirmed within 24 hours. Our maintenance number is redirected to our afterhours service if the call is outside of business hours.

Non-urgent repairs 🛠️
These repairs are important but not dangerous: Locksmith services are a good example of non-urgent repairs. Please make non-urgent requests during office hours (Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm). Reporting non-urgent maintenance after hours can result in a service charge. Requests are confirmed in 14 days.

Stop the Flu
Help stop the flu in 2022
This year it’s even more important to get the flu vaccine.

In recent years there has been less of the flu circulating in the community and less people having their flu vaccine, due to Covid. With international borders reopening, it’s likely we will see more flu in 2022.

The flu vaccine is recommended for people aged 6 months and over and is free for those most at risk.

You can find out more about the flu vaccination and who can get it for FREE in this flyer.

The flyer can be downloaded in other languages here.

Speak to your GP or other immunisation provider about getting vaccinated against the flu.

Celebrate a neighbour
Celebrating Neighbour Day with Jobs Victoria
We enjoyed catching up with tenants at our Neighbour Day Community BBQ in Doncaster. A big thank you to all the tenants who joined us.

Local support services hosted the event to create a fun day. There was face painting, games, music and a free sausage sizzle. People and their families we welcome to come relax, enjoy the activities and meet friendly local support workers.

Thank you to our partners Jobs Co, Jobs Victoria and the Salvos who planned the event with us.
Tenants host a range of local community meet ups
We offered five $100 vouchers to tenants to help host a local event. We had a great response to the competition and were very inspired by the community spirit. Janet took neighbours who live alone out to dinner. Andy hosted a pizza party for her block.

Haven Home Safe in the news
This month Triple J Hack visited our social housing development, Sidney Myer Haven in Bendigo, to find out how we’re helping young people at risk of homelessness by helping them with housing and supporting them to work out the next steps in their lives.
